take action

Maui Nui Empowered is powered by people like you. Real change happens when the community comes together and takes action. Whether you’re a lifelong Maui resident who cares about keeping the island affordable, a homebuilder passionate about creating housing solutions, or simply someone who loves Maui and wants to give back – we welcome you to join our movement. There are many ways to get involved and be part of the solution. Below are some opportunities tailored for our primary supporters:

  • Stay Informed: Knowledge is power. Subscribe to our newsletter for updates on housing developments, cost-of-living news, and upcoming county decisions. Follow us on social media for educational snippets and announcements. An informed community can speak up with confidence.

  • Volunteer: Lend your time and talents. Volunteers help with outreach, research, and advocacy efforts. You might assist with phone banking for an important housing ordinance, help distribute flyers in your neighborhood about a public meeting, or volunteer your professional skills (anything from graphic design to event planning) to advance our cause. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference.

  • Share Your Story: One of the most powerful things you can do is simply share your experience. How have housing or high costs impacted you or your ʻohana (family)? By putting a human face on these issues, you can influence leaders to act. Write a letter to the editor, speak at a community meeting, or allow us to feature your story (with permission) in our communications. Your voice matters.

  • Vote and Advocate: Use your voice where it counts – at the ballot box and in the halls of government. Support candidates who prioritize affordable housing and cost-of-living solutions. Testify at public hearings (in person or via written testimony) on relevant issues; we can notify you when critical housing or economic measures are up for debate. Your polite but firm advocacy to council members and other officials – through calls, emails, and testimony – helps keep these issues at the top of the agenda.

  • Donate or Sponsor: While we are primarily a people-powered movement, financial support helps fuel our advocacy campaigns and research. Consider making a donation to Maui Nui Empowered or sponsoring a specific project (such as the publication of a new white paper or a community workshop series). Your contribution will directly support our mission of housing and affordability. (As a 501(c)(4), donations are not tax-deductible, but they go a long way toward making an impact.)

  • Stay Connected: Change doesn’t happen overnight. Stay connected with us for the long run. Together, we’ll celebrate wins (like a new affordable housing project ground-breaking or a helpful law passed) and persist through setbacks. Join our member list to receive occasional action alerts, so you know when a critical moment is happening (for example, a key vote at the County Council) and how you can help.

Every person who gets involved strengthens Maui Nui Empowered and our community’s prospects. There is no contribution too small – whether it’s an hour of your time, a small donation, or simply your enthusiasm and ideas. Maui’s challenges are big, but when we come together with the spirit of kākou (all of us united), we have the power to make meaningful change. Your involvement matters. Let’s work side by side to ensure Maui remains home for all who love it.
